Prof. Basil J. Hiley was born on 15/11/1935. He obtained a First Class Honours degree from King’s College, London in Special Physics in 1959, before going on to complete his PhD on Cooperative Phenomena in ferromagnets and long chain polymer molecules from King’s College, London in 1962. He then joined the Physics Department at Birkbeck College and was appointed to a Chair in Physics in 1995. He is Emeritus Professor of Physics at Birkbeck, University of London and holds a position of Honorary Professor of University College London.
His main interests are in the foundations of quantum theory and relativity and had long and fruitful collaboration with the late Professor David Bohm of Birkbeck College. He has over 170 publications in refereed journals. He co-edited a collection of essays “Quantum Implications: Essays in Honour of David Bohm” which contained contributions from four Nobel Prize winners. Together with David Bohm, he wrote “The Undivided Universe: an Ontological Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics” which presents a summary of their work together over a period of thirty years. It is now considered a classic in its field.
He has continued his research into the foundations of quantum mechanics and is at present involved in experiments using the new notion of weak measurements with Dr R. Flack and Prof Peter Barker of University College, London. The Journal Foundations of Physics devoted a special issue: Basil Hiley Festschrift in recognition of his work in physics. He has been awarded the Italian Majorana Prize: Best Person in Physics 2012 for his contributions to Quantum Theory.
